My Story 1:
How I am pain-free with Grade 2 Spondylolisthesis: My Journey
"Without spine fusion, you’ll be in a wheelchair by your 30s."
My Story: I had always been the bendy one in dance class—movement was my joy. But one day, everything stopped.
I thought core strength was the answer, so I hired a personal trainer. On my very first deadlift, pain shot through my slipped vertebra. The next three weeks, I could barely get out of bed—my back felt like metal rods were stuck in it.
That’s when I knew: there had to be a different way. I needed someone who understands Spondy.
My Story 2:
What I tried and how it didn't work
Physical Therapy (PT)
I turned to PT, hoping for answers. But even skilled therapists often didn’t fully understand Spondylolisthesis.
The cycle repeated: e-stim, manual therapy, and generic core programs that didn’t address the root cause. The time, the money, the lack of progress — it felt like another dead end.
Yoga
Yoga gave me temporary relief — a few seconds here and there — but the repetitive forward folds and cobra-style extensions made things far worse. Later, I learned those very movements are among the leading causes of further slippage and flare-ups for Spondy patients.
Reformer Pilates
Pilates felt different. For the first time, I saw its potential as a powerful rehab tool. But there was a problem: most instructors simply didn’t understand Spondylolisthesis.
Group classes and even private sessions would flare me up. Springs on the reformer can be a gift — or a hazard — depending on the exercise. I discovered only certain, spine-safe Pilates movements truly help Spondy clients. Without that knowledge, Pilates can be just as harmful as it is healing.
Conventional Physical Therapy (Again)
I tried returning to PT, but the cycle repeated: e-stim, manual therapy, and generic core programs that didn’t address the root cause. The time, the money, the lack of progress — it felt like another dead end.
Chiropractic
I also tried chiropractic care. While adjustments brought short-term relief, the abrupt spinal twisting felt risky. For someone with Spondy, aggressive manipulation can actually destabilize the spine further — making the condition worse instead of better.
Spine Surgery
I even explored spinal fusion surgery. But the risks were staggering:
20–40% of patients experience “failed back surgery syndrome,” where pain persists or worsens.
Spinal fusions often put more stress on adjacent vertebrae, leading to new problems.
And here’s the kicker: the rehab you’re prescribed after surgery is almost identical to the corrective work you’d do before surgery.
So I thought: why not try the rehab first — and maybe avoid the knife altogether?
